Now that Daylight Savings has passed, this time of year usually sparks memories of flowers blooming, warmer weather, longer days… and time to start that Spring cleaning.

If it’s time to polish your pad from floor to ceiling, we have some natural recipes to make the process good for you and the environment.  These common household items work just as well as the most expensive and toxic cleaners on the market.

Baking Soda

Use on top of countertops, ovens, bathtubs, and sinks. It also rids of odors; sprinkle on to your carpet before vacuuming to eliminate lingering smells.

Tea Tree Oil

A natural sanitizer, add a few drops to a spray bottle filled with water then use to disinfect surfaces around the house.

All Purpose Cleaner

Mix ½ cup vinegar and ¼ cup of baking soda into ½ gallon of water

Carpet cleaner

Mix equal part of white vinegar and water in a pray bottle. Spray directly on to stain, let sit for a few minutes, and clean with brush or sponge using warm, soapy water.

Furniture Polish

Add a few drops of lemon oil into ½ cup warm water

Oven Cleaner

Moisten oven surfaces with sponge and water. Mix ¾ cup baking soda, 1/4 cup salt and ¼ cup water to make a thick pasta and spread throughout oven interior. Let sit over night. Remove with a spatula and wipe clean.

For all of the unwanted Christmas gifts still sitting in boxes along with other items that are taking up space in your garage and storage, drop them to us and we’ll recycle them! From cardboard to appliances, lightbulbs to electronics, we’ll make sure they’re given new life without harming the planet. Our Resource Recovery Facility is open 7 days a week, so come by, say hi, and get cleaning!

Repurposing – The 4th R of Recycling!

February 20th, 2013 • By: happy HSR Services, Live Green, Uncategorized

We’re all familiar with recycling, but what exactly is repurposing? Repurposing, or “upcycling,” is an even more efficient way to reuse what we have by getting creative and assigning new uses to pre-owned items. It’s a great step to take before tossing that cardboard box into the recycling bin.

By salvaging a discarded shipping container from the landfill and repurposing it, Gibson’s Recycling Depot acquired a new place to house a densification baler. The roof structure is reclaimed pipe that was used to deliver oil and fuels from the Hopkins Landing dock to the bulk fuel storage facility. Now, the roof is placed at the optimum angle to make the solar array the most efficient.

Check it out!

Turn almost anything into art!

Who needs an excuse to combine environmentalism with art? Almost any old item of electronics could become part of a fun crafts project! Depending on your level of talent and time, you can make some cute and quirky gifts or follow in the footsteps of artists like Miguel Rivera, who sculpts old hard drives into creations like the robot pictured above.  Some have truly turned the craft of repurposing into a lucrative hobby!

Green Love

February 12th, 2013 • By: happy Current Events, Eco Tips, HSR Services, Live Green, Uncategorized

With Valentine’s day just a couple of days away, it’s time to spoil that special someone in your life with the usual suspects: chocolates, candy, roses and cards.

But while Cupid is busy matchmaking, our Earth is taking the hit from his arrow. Just take a look at how much it cost our planet to shower your loved one last year:

  • About 35,000kg of CO2 were emitted by growing 12,000 rose stems
  • Empty wine bottles created 600,000 tonnes of glass waste
  • 12 million cards are sent on Valentine’s Day. The paper industry contributes around 10% of global carbon emissions
  • 3.3 million tones of waste food from hotels, restaurants and bars were thrown away

And now you have another reason to feel guilty after inhaling that box of chocolates, as most leave a large carbon footprint since they are imported from other parts of the world.

So how about you show some love to our planet by creating a sustainable Valentine’s Day? Here are some of our favourite ways to dote on that special someone, yourself, and the environment:

Buy tulips instead of roses. Tulips are theoretically the best way to reduce the CO2 emitted from growing stems

Go Organic. Organic flowers, organic cacao, organic paper etc. Going organic is easier nowadays with the raising number of brands advocating environmental friendly consumption and it can help reduce pesticides concerns.

Go local. Support locally grown flowers or locally produced chocolates to cut down our carbon footprints.

Create Romance at home. Valentine’s day can be just as romantic staying in, lighting the fire, pouring some locally-grown wine… you get the jist.

Give E-cards. These personalized gestures of love are never out of trend. They are eco-friendly because they create zero-waste and for all of you last-minute lovers, you can even send them through your smart phone.

Gift green with these eco-friendly ideas!

DIY shows more thought. Spending the time and energy to make a gift yourself shows that special someone just how special they are. Try these DIY gift ideas.

Remember, Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be a drag on your wallet or our planet. It truly is the thought that counts, so get creative, go green, and if you don’t have a special someone, spoil yourself!
