Are You into Heavy Metal?

How many metals are in your kitchen cupboards right now? Chances are, quite a few. From soda to soup, aluminum foil to utensils, aluminum and steel are the most common types of metals that we use on a daily basis. Thankfully we can recycle these materials time and time again without losing their properties or quality. In doing so, we conserve non-renewable fossil fuels, reduce the consumption of energy, and decrease the emission of gasses like carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Essentially reusing these materials can become a never-ending process that continues to save energy and resources.

Years ago you had to remove the paper labels and the tops and bottoms of cans, but now it’s a much simpler and easier process. Just rinse the food from the cans and throw it into the recycling bin. Yep, that’s it.

Despite how easy it is, aluminum and steel are still thrown into the garbage. In fact, North Americans use over 100 million steel cans and over 200 million aluminum beverage cans every day. This pointless waste erodes in the landfills, damaging our environment and causing new metal products to be manufactured.

It all starts with you. When it comes to recycling metals, say to yourself:

It’s not just food and drink materials that can be recycled. At HSR Services, we can take care of:

  • Toasters
  • Microwaves
  • Blenders
  • Dishwashers
  • Stoves
  • Washers and Dryers
  • Electrical Wire
  • Electrical Tools
  • Metal Hangers
  • Aluminum Foil & Pie Pans
  • BBQ’s (No Coals)
  • Lawn Mowers
  • Lamps
  • Food & Pet Food Cans & Lids
  • Old keys
  • Locks
  • Metal door handles and hinges
  • Faucets

This is just a portion of the entire list that we can recycle! To see what else we’ll accept, visit our website.

If you have items you need to get rid of, we have two blue metal bins outside for collection. Anything too big to put in the bins (i.e. washers, dryers, stoves, etc) can be placed beside the bins inside our driveway.

Shred It and Forget It!

March 25th, 2014 • By: happy Eco Tips, HSR Services, Live Green, Uncategorized

Did you know that March is Fraud Prevention Month? One of the most effective ways to prevent fraud is to shred personal information to protect you, your clients, and your company. Here at Happy Stan’s, we offer two different types of shredding to suit your needs.

Document Shredding

paper and hard drive destruction

All businesses have confidential information. From bank statements to invoices, at some point these documents need to be destroyed in a secure way. We can collect and dispose of confidential papers and transport them securely to be shredded.

Hard Drive Shredding

paper and hard drive destruction

Since most businesses keep many of their records on computers, we offer services to shred entire hard drives. Once a hard drive has been shredded, it is impossible to recover. This is especially helpful when closing a business or year end.

After we shred your confidential data, we recycle the leftover materials. So you can feel at ease that you’re protecting your information and helping the planet, all with Happy Stan’s Recycling!

Spring Cleaning with Happy Stan’s Recycling

March 19th, 2014 • By: happy Eco Tips, Energy Saving Tips, Live Green, Uncategorized

Ahhh… Spring. A season synonymous with new beginnings, renewal, and rejuvenation. After months of cold weather and dark days, we can finally start shedding those extra layers of clothing and admire the flowers beginning to bloom around the Tricities.

It’s little wonder why many people undertake Spring cleaning this time of year, as this ritual can create a sense of cleanliness and accomplishment. However, are your cleaning agents causing more damage than good? Besides just the packaging, many cleaning products are filled with toxic chemicals that are extremely harmful to not only the environment, but you and your family.

When Spring Cleaning this year, challenge yourself to practicing zero-waste by donating, recycling, or repurposing old items. Here are a few tips from Happy Stan on how to adapt the green approach:

Step 1: De-Clutter

-Go through old clothes and toys in your home and make donation piles.

The City of Port Coquitlam’s City-Wide Garage Sale is coming up on April 26th, which is a great way to not only reduce your imprint, but also meet new people and make some money!

-Tidy up the garage. We take several types of materials for recycling including old nails, cardboard, batteries light bulbs, small appliances, and electronics.

-Put aside items that can be repurposed.

Step 2: Start scrubbing
spring cleaning
Citrus fruits are some of the best natural cleaners around and are a key ingredient in many homemade cleaning product recipes. Did you know that if you cut a grapefruit in half and add some salt, it will scrub the ring out of your tub and whiten your grout? Plus, you get a delicious lingering scent that is free from chemicals.

Here are Stan’s top five ingredients you need for green cleaning:

1. Vinegar – powerful disinfectant

2. Baking soda –absorbs grease, odors and is a gentle scrubber

3. Antiseptic essential oil such as tea tree or lavender

4. Hydrogen peroxide – effective alternative to bleach

5. Salt – fights mold and mildew

Try this simple recipe for cleaning everything from countertops to windows:

2 cups Water
1 cup Hydrogen Peroxide
¼ cup Lemon Juice
Mix all together in a recycled plastic jug or spray bottle.

Step 3: Repurpose

spring cleaning
-Reasses the items you no longer need and see if there’s a way for them to be repurposed. Often a seemingly damaged product can be given a new life, you just need to get creative!

-Fabric recycling programs are hard to come by, so if you have clothes that are not appropriate for donation because they are torn or stained, why not cut them up for rags? Old flannel baby sleepers, pajamas, or t-shirts make great dusting or dish cloths.

-Have some cd racks hanging around that you’ll never use again? Try putting them in drawers in the kitchen to keep your lids organized for your food storage containers.

It’s a big job, but trust us, you’ll feel better knowing that you’re starting fresh this Spring with a clean and healthy home. If you want to learn how to make your business or apartment complex more sustainable, feel free to contact us for a custom-tailored recycling program: 604-464-0242.

Have Old Stock? Happy Stan’s Recycling Can Take Care of It!

Spring is just around the corner, which means it’s time to finally rid of that old winter stock. But if your stock room is packed to the brim and that 75% off sign still won’t make the sale, you may be tempted just to throw it out all together.

But there’s another option besides the garbage bin! If your business has old furniture, electronics, and appliances that won’t sell due to being damaged or if it’s just been sitting in your showroom too long, hire us and we will pick it up from your business and do the recycling for you.

Our destruction service allows you to have your merchandise picked up, dismantled, and sold as a recyclable commodity. Because the material used to make the product has value to us, we are able to perform this service at a much lower rate than landfill tipping fees. Plus, we have our own trucks, making it more cost-efficient for you!

destruction of merchandise

We even provide you with a certificate of destruction, so you can be reassured that nothing was resold. It’s a decision you can feel good about for your business and the environment, plus your customers will be happy to learn that you’re taking eco-friendly actions. If you have old electronics, light bulbs, or batteries, at home that can’t be returned because they are past warranty or simply don’t work anymore, we’d be happy to recycle them as well! Just bring them by our location at 1603 Langan Avenue in Port Coquitlam.
